About Clemson University

Clemson University is a public, coeducational, land-grant, research university located in Clemson, which is a city in the US state of South Carolina, mostly located in Pickens County, also spreading into Anderson County, with a population estimated at a number of nearly 12 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census.

 

Clemson University was founded in 1889, by Thomas Green Clemson, who died on April 6, 1888, leaving most of his estate in his will to be used to establish a college that would teach scientific agriculture and the mechanical arts to South Carolinians. In July 1893, Clemson Agricultural College was formally opened, with an initial enrollment of 446, first starting as an all-white male military school, remaining so until 1955, when it changed to "civilian" status for students and became a coeducational institution.

 

The institution adopted its current names in 1964, to better reflect its mission, expanding its academic offerings and research pursuits, since then, the university constantly growing, having today an enrollment of over 17 000 students, from across all 50 states and other 89 countries, offering various educational programs in numerous fields of study, through 5 academic divisions: Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences; Business and Behavioral Sciences; Architecture, Arts and Humanities; Engineering and Science; and Health, Education and Human Development.

 

Athletics

Clemson's athletic teams are known as the Clemson Tigers, who compete in 19 varsity men's and women's sports, in the Atlantic Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference of the NCAA's Division I. The teams have experienced vistory, many times, in many of their sports, over the years, among their most notable achievements being the 4 national championships won, of which 2 are in men's soccer, in '84 and '87, one is in football, in '81 and one is in men's golf, in 2003.

Davies - CEO of LendingTree, LLC, Jay Berger - professional tennis player ranked as high as # 7 in the world, Rudolf Anderson Jr. - a major in the United States Air Force, who was the only combat casualty of the Cuban Missile Crisis when his U-2 spy plane was shot down, Fiona Hutchison - One Life to Live actress, Mitzi Kremer - 1998 Olympic bronze medalist in swimming, and Richard C. Davis - founder of Trademark Properties, appeared in the first season of A&E's Flip This House among others.
